Neurological Disorders Q & A

What are neurological disorders?

Neurological disorders are health problems that attack your central nervous system, which is made up of your nerves, brain, and spinal cord. Neurological disorders come in many forms. They affect your body and your health in different ways.

Types of neurological disorders include:

Headaches

Headaches cause pain in your head, face, and upper neck. The most common types of headaches are migraines and tension headaches, but other forms include sinus headaches, cluster headaches, and rebound headaches. Migraines cause pulsing, pounding pain in your head that’s often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. You also may experience blurry vision or feel lightheaded with a migraine.

Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder caused by damage to the region of your brain that controls muscle movement. The disease can cause shaking, stiffness, and make you move more slowly.

Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a rare disorder where your immune system attacks your body. With MS, you may experience a range of symptoms as the disease progresses, including:

  • Vision problems
  • Trouble thinking clearly
  • Memory lapses
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Poor coordination
  • Pins and needles sensations
  • Tremors or spasms

You also may have weakness or numbness on one side of your body or below the waist.

How are neurological disorders diagnosed?

Dr. Sidhu sits down to talk with you about your symptoms and closely listens to what you have to say. She then performs an examination. What occurs during your exam depends on the symptoms you described, among other factors.

With some neurological conditions, she looks for changes in your reflexes, eye movements, muscle coordination, weakness, balance, and speech.

If you’re experiencing headaches, it’s helpful to keep track of the pattern of your headaches, such as when they occur and how they feel. This can help Dr. Sidhu determine the triggers.

Before making a diagnosis, she may suggest tests to rule out other potential causes of your symptoms. The tests may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Neurological tests
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Spinal tap

To confirm a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Sidhu may refer you to a specialist, such as a neurologist.

How are neurological disorders treated?

Dr. Sidhu tailors your treatment plan to your exact condition. She listens to your health concerns and addresses your condition by providing education and personal development, along with high-quality medical care.
